How to measure a sanding belt

Start with two measurements: width × full loop length. Check them against your machine specification before choosing the grit and abrasive material.

50 × 915 mm

Width across the belt × length around the entire loop

This example is a size, not a fit recommendation for your machine.

Check the label first

Look for dimensions on the back of your existing belt, its packaging or the machine manual. Record the units as well as the numbers. If the marking and your measurement disagree, send both with your machine model before ordering.

Measure an existing belt

Isolate the machine from power and remove the belt following its manual. Measure the removed belt on a clean, flat surface.

  1. Measure across the width

Use a ruler across the belt from one side edge to the other. Record the width in millimetres.

  2. Measure the complete length

Gently flatten the loop without stretching it. Measure from one folded end to the other, then double that reading for an approximate full loop length. For example, 457.5mm × 2 = 915mm.

  3. Cross-check before ordering

Compare the result with the marked belt size and machine specification. A worn, distorted or damaged belt may not give a reliable replacement size. Do not round to a nearby catalogue size and assume it will fit.

If an old belt is already cut open, measure its full end-to-end length. You do not need to cut a usable belt to check its size.

Method reference: Preferred Abrasives’ belt-measuring guidance. Always confirm the required size with your machine specification.

Size is only the first check

For a useful replacement enquiry, include the grit, abrasive material and backing shown on the old belt. Share the workpiece material and any joint or running-direction requirements. Matching dimensions alone does not confirm suitability.

No old belt or readable label?

Send the machine make and model, a photo of its specification plate and any manual dimensions. Tell us what you know; we will check the requested specification before confirming supply.
